Honey, I shrunk the Vaio

Sony Vaio

Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced a new category of tiny PCs called the UMPC (Ultra Mobile Personal Computer) - the computer about the size of paperback novel running the full version of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

The Sony VGN-UX17GP is an incredible tiny mobile PC that come with 4.5in screen and is about the size of a paperback novel, but it is not a UMPC.

Navigation

  1. It fits nicely in both hands like we do held a Sony Playstation Portable Edition.
  2. Falling under our right thumb is a little ‘pointstick’, much like the ones found on IBM notebooks. The pointstick works well in moving the cursor and selecting stuff around. It also can be tapped to engaged the equivalent of a left-click on a PC mouse.
  3. Three buttons on the left side works as a pointstick also. Top button works like a mouse’s left button and the one below serves as a right-click to bring up context menus in Windows XP. The third button is unique, as when it been held down, the pointstick change into a scroller to scroll page up and down.
  4. The screen is touch-senstive and can be tapped using our finger or with supplied stylus, much like a Pocket PC device.
  5. Have a zoom buttom that allow us to magnify parts of the desktop big and easy to see.
