TheSun – Tokyo. Japanese electronics giant Panasonic yesterday gave notice of its intention to be number one in the race to roll out the world’s first commercially-produced three-dimensional high-definition (3D HD) television.

Its president Fumio Ohtsubo told a group of 60-odd journalists from various regions in the world: “I’m confident Panasonic will be the first to introduced 3D TV to the market. Of course, timing is still confidential.”

The product, which is the most exciting innovation since close rival Sony gave the world Blu-Ray to set new heights in high-resolution digital video, is set to be on sale next year, according to publicity material now being distributed at Japan’s largest consumer electronics and technology exhibition, CEATEC, which opened on Tuesday at the massive Makuhari Exhibition Center here.

Panasonic’s booth displays a prototype of the 3D HD TV, complete with the specially developed active shutter glasses that are superior to those mickey-mouse type of 3D glasses we are familiar with.

It is wowing visitors awned by the awesome image clarity that is now only seen on cinema screens. Not to be outdone, rivals like Sony and Sharp are also showcase their 3D TV prototypes, signaling where the next battlefront will in the consumer television market next year.

To a question, Ohtsubo described 3D TV as the most important product for the company now, but also underlined the importance of long-term projects like energy creation and energy storage and other ecology-friendly ideas that are sustainable.

Panasonic’s markets its TV under the VIERA brand, grabbing 30% of the Malaysian TV sales to make it the market leader, according to its Malaysian managing director Tony Endoh at the exhibition center. “We aim to bring it to 35% next year,” he said.

Television is a core product in Panasonic range of consumer electronics. As such, the hype over 3D TV has a lot to do with market share, as the company that hits the market first with the product can claim product affiliation that is important to branding (theSun).

As Akibaharanews reported, “We had the chance to enjoy the first demo of Panasonic 3D video technology a few months ago, but we could not resist giving it another try… And while I admit that Toshiba 3D Cell Regza was impressive, Panasonic 3D Technology seems slightly better on their 103” LCD” – more at Akihabaranews.

Engadget.com reported that the Panasonic’s 1080p panel was strikingly thin (or well mounted to give that impression), and the viewing angles were fantastic. The glasses that Panny provided, however, were relatively annoying (no surprise there). It should be noted that the actual spectacles sit pretty far off of your face, which simultaneously enables those with actual glasses to partake in the 3D experience while frustrating those without by giving them a cute blue rim that refuses to leave the periphery.

As for image quality, the G-Force demo looked downright stunning, with depth being easily perceived and fast moving action whisking about seamlessly.. more at Engadget.com.
